The Public Screening and Awards Presentation of the 24th Maine Student Film and Video Festival will be held Saturday, July 7, 2001, at 1:00 PM at the Railroad Square Cinema in Waterville, Maine. The screening is free and open to the public. This screening of finalists and winning movies is held in conjunction with the Maine International Film Festival. The MSFVF is open to Maine residents 19 years of age and younger. This year it received 42 entries from students in grades K - 12 representing all parts of Maine. The movies submitted to the Festival are judged on the basis of originality, content, style, and technique. Movies are reviewed in three categories:
- Pre-Teen Division, grades K - 6
- Junior Division, grades 7 - 9, and
- Senior Division, grades 10 - 12.
This year’s Grand Prize winner is James Kienitz Wilkins, a junior at Edward Little High School in Auburn, Maine. For his movie Fingertip Points Out the Problem, Wilkins receives a scholarship to the International Film and Television Workshops in association with Rockport College in Rockport. The scholarship is worth $1,995 for a two week course for young filmmakers being held this summer at the Workshops. Fingertip Points Out the Problem is 10 minutes long and will be shown in its entirety at the July 7 Festival screening.
Wilkins is past winner of the MSFVF. In 1999 his movie A Curious Exertion was a winner in the Junior Division. In 2000, his movie Fight a Force of Friendly Fire was a winner in the Senior Division. James is a talented visual artist and musician as well.
The three judges for the 24th MSFVF were:
- Dan Osgood, commercial director at VP Films, Portland. He is currently directing the Partnership for Tobacco-Free Maine television spots broadcast on stations throughout Maine.
- Cindy Foley, Director of Education and Assistant Curator at ICA, Maine College of Art, Portland. Foley is past director of the Ohio Short Film and Video Showcase, Wexner Center, Ohio State University, Columbus, OH.
