25th Maine Student Film and Video Festival
MSFVF is open to Maine residents 19 years of age and younger. This year, we
received 51 entries from students in grades K - 12 representing all parts
of Maine. The movies submitted to the Festival are judged on the basis of
Wind Bird (19 minutes) was shown in its
entirety at the July 13 Festival screening.
Tiana Vermette is past winner of the MSFVF. In 2000 her movie How Raven
Stole the Sun was a winner in the Senior Division. In 1998, her movie Our
Dances was a winner in the Junior Division. Wind Bird was also selected
for screening at the Taos Talking Picture Festival in New Mexico, and the
Atlanta Film and Video Festival in Georgia.

federally tax-exempt non-profit organization. Funding and in-kind

The Public Screening and Awards Presentation of the 25th Maine
Student Film and Video Festival was held Saturday, July 13, 2002, at 1:00
P.M. at the Waterville Opera House in Waterville, Maine. The screening was free
and open to the public. This screening of finalist and winning movies was
held in conjunction with the 5th Maine International Film Festival.

This year's Grand Prize winner is Tiana Vermette of Old Town, Maine.
Her movie, Wind Bird is a clay animation adaptation of a Penobscot Gluscap
legend. Vermette is a member of the Penobscot Nation. She receives a
scholarship to the International Film and Television Workshops in
association with Rockport College, Rockport. The scholarship, worth $1,995,
is for a two week summer course for young filmmakers held at the
Workshops.
The MSFVF's director is Huey, an independent filmmaker and member of the
Maine Touring Artists Program. Huey has been the Festival's director since
1978. He resides in Portland.
